Quest through the colourful and crazy lands of Craftworld in stunning super-duper sharp 4K clarity*! Gasp in wonderment at beautifully detailed high-resolution images. The adorable Astro’s Playroom may have stolen people’s hearts at the launch of the PlayStation 5 (no doubt in part thanks to it coming along for free), but any 3D platformer fan would do well to not leave Sackboy: A Big Adventure locked in the toybox. So we gradually fight our way to Vex’s dark realm. There we collect point bubbles for our high score, new costumes and dream balls with which we unlock new areas such as a picturesque underwater kingdom or a spaced-out robo world. In order to stop the nasty grinning clown and let our creativity run free again, we hop through a number of lovingly sewn, glued and welded 3D levels. There’s a real replayability factor too as you’ve got lots of costumes to unlock and secrets to find that you may have missed multiple times in some levels. Cast your mind back to Knack on PS4 launch and it wasn’t quite the same quality.
Does it show off all the PS5 can do? No, but it does give that new console a genuinely very strong platformer from day one. The game looks beautiful, so colourful and packed with humour that it’s a joy to play, or even just watch someone play. It’s up there with Mario in it’s level design at the team at Sumo Sheffield should be proud of what they’ve achieved here. Craftworld’s top technicians have come up with a host of impressive graphical and performance-based gaming features so you can get the most fun way.
You’ll find yourself jumping around, dashing across chasms on jet boots and using grappling hooks and sticky glue to traverse wonderful crafted levels that are choc-full of hidey holes and hidden areas. But you’re straight into the puzzle platforming from the off and the difficulty curve is perfectly pitched for kids and adults alike. There’s a baddie and all your mates get kidnapped, so you have to travel from planet to planet to save the day, etc etc. The story, as with every Sackboy game ever made, is nonsense.
